Chamber of commerce connects to Puyallup history

Published: April 11th, 2008 01:32 PM

During our recent move to our new office space, we uncovered a treasure trove of artifacts from days gone by.

Established in 1892, the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce has been part of this valley’s economic development since the early days.

We found beautifully kept meeting notes, written in longhand and bound in leather. We learned that Ezra Meeker became part of the board in 1893. We found photos, lists of past presidents and other mementos that are an essential part of the history of this valley.

We were fortunate to find that the staff at the Meeker Mansion is very willing to be the keepers of such history. Their staff has restoration skills and historical expertise that ensure that these treasures will be kept in our community for years to come.

While the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is still celebrating its new location at 323 N. Meridian, we are grateful to Andy Anderson and his team at the Meeker Mansion for keeping our history alive.

In other news, Terre-Verte, a group of six Puyallup painters, is now showing a breathtaking selection of their work at the Chamber offices. The show features a range of styles and media including watercolors, charcoals, oils and block prints.

All of the pieces are for sale and the public is invited to view the paintings anytime during weekday business hours. The six painters will be on hand to talk about their work during the Art and Wine Walk from 1 to 6 p.m. May 10.

Today, April 10, the Chamber is hosting an action-packed Business Showcase event at the fairgrounds in the Expo Hall.

About 50 companies will be showcasing their products and services in exhibits that will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow and Puyallup Mayor Don Malloy will be giving a State of the Cities address at noon.

Restaurant Row and a special Business After Hours event will be hosted from 4 to 6 p.m. featuring live music by Back 2 Skool. Don’t miss out on the Office Olympics event at 3:30 p.m. The Business Showcase is free and open to the public. The State of the Cities Luncheon is $35 and requires advance registration.
