Beyond the Athlete: Tenacity gives Hudson an edge

Published: April 25th, 2008 12:14 PM

Sometimes Emerald Ridge Jaguars boys soccer head coach David Rosdahl forgets Suku Hudson is only a sophomore.

Hudson, who was the only freshman to make the varsity roster one year ago, is already a focal point on a team aiming for its second consecutive berth to the state tournament.

“Suku is so good I forget how young he is sometimes,” Rosdahl said. “He’s got speed, skill and is highly competitive.”

Hudson scored three goals this season, finding the back of the net against Beamer, Spanaway Lake and Graham-Kapowsin.

“I’m so glad he’s going to be around for two more years,” Rosdahl said. “He’s going to continue developing his game and do a lot of great things for this team.”

Hudson thinks this year’s version of the Jaguars can reach the pinnacle of soccer in Washington.

“After winning against Rogers last week, I think we can go really far the rest of the way,” Hudson said. “I think we can make it to the state playoffs again. We need to keep on working together as a team to make it happen.”

Recently, I had an opportunity to ask Hudson a few questions about his life outside of soccer.

Shaun Scott: What is your favorite movie of all time?

Suku Hudson: “Remember the Titans. The whole white and black thing and seeing them come together was pretty cool. Football also is one of my favorite sports.”

SS: If you could pick one place to dine in Puyallup, where would it be?

SH: “I would definitely have to go with the Outback Steakhouse. I’m a meat kind of guy. That’s what I like to eat.”

SS: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?

SH: “I would go to dinner with my whole family. They adopted me in 1997. I came here from Liberia. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

SS: Outside of soccer, what are your favorite hobbies?

SH: “I like to hang out with friends, ride my bike and play football.”

SS: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

SH: “It’s from a lot of different people. The things I’m thinking of are “never give up and always persevere.”

SS: Who was your idol growing up?

SH: “My older brother Tim. He’s awesome. I’ve always wanted to be like him.”

SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?

SH: “Probably in college. I’m only a sophomore so I’m still thinking about what I want to do in the future.”
