Spartans softballers slither to a big win

Despite three errors in the field, Sumner nabs its second victory of the year against Franklin Pierce

Published: May 5th, 2008 04:57 PM

Nothing can stop the Sumner Spartans fastpitch team when Katie Littlefield has her game going on the mound.

One of Sumner’s top hurlers scattered seven hits and two runs while compiling six strikeouts in the Spartans’ 4-2 win against SPSL rival Franklin Piece in Sumner on April 23.

“Katie pitched a solid game for us. She didn’t have any walks which is good because they didn’t have that many base runners,” Spartans assistant coach Jeff Baines said. “She did what she needed to do for us in order to get the win.”

The Spartans put up three runs early on resulting in a 3-0 lead three innings into the contest.

But the Cardinals wouldn’t go away quietly.

The Cardinals got on the board scoring one run in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth, cutting Sumner’s lead to 3-2. The Spartans scored their fourth and final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth, which in the end was the last time anyone crossed the plate for the remainder of the game.

“Franklin Pierce was a lot better this time around than when we played them last time,” Baines said. “But a win is a win. This will give us a little momentum and be a big confidence booster for us.”

The contest against Franklin Pierce was Sumner’s third game in three days. That trend will continue into the next few weeks because of the horde of rainouts earlier in the season.

“Right now I think we’re just taking it one day at a time,” Baines said. “We haven’t been playing great defense lately (three error against FP), but we’ve been scratching our way through to wins. We haven’t put it all together yet but we’re working on it. We’re continuing to work hard and compete in a tough SPSL 3A Division.”

Spartans’ players turning in top notch performances against the Cardinals included Rory Zambard, who went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and Krysta Beers who went 1-for-2, scoring two runs.

Baines said shortstop Heather Greenwood and first baseman Sadie Baines played proficient games defensively as well.
