Beyond the Athlete: Vikings trackster soars past competitors

Published: May 12th, 2008 01:05 PM

IV Reeves’ ability to soar through the air is paying off in his favorite event —the triple jump. Thus far, Puyallup’s junior sprinter and jumper has leapt the farthest of anyone on his team — levitating 41 feet, 11 inches in the air in the triple jump on March 20 against the Curtis Vikings.

Reeves has finished in first place in every regular season dual meet this season.

“I’m undefeated in triple jump,” Reeves said. “I want to go to state this year and eventually break the school record. I’m only a junior so I have some time to get there.”

Reeves said he enjoys the laid back atmosphere of track and field.

“Track is different than a lot of other sports,” Reeves said. “It’s an individual sport where your allowed to express yourself and be competitive at the same time.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to ask Reeves a few questions about his life outside of track and field.

Shaun Scott: What is your favorite movie of all time?

IV Reeves: “It’s ‘Night at the Museum.’ I like that movie because the characters have to stand up for what they believe in. Everything comes together and you have to show that you believe in yourself.”

SS: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?

IR: “Kyoto Teriyaki. I just love that kind of food.”

SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?

IR: “I will be in college. I want to study computer engineering.”

SS: Who was your idol growing up?

IR: “I really didn’t have any idols. I just always thought about doing the best I can to achieve in life.”

SS: What is the last book you’ve read?

IR: “It was in my English class. It was called ‘Warriors Don’t Cry’ by Melba Pattillo Beals.”

SS: What is your favorite dinner dish?

IR: “It’s funny because I’m going to go with a breakfast combination. It would be pancakes, eggs and sausage. That is a good combo. I love it.”

SS: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?

IR: “It wouldn’t be just one person. It would be all of my friends. I don’t get to spend too much time with them because of school and sports.”
