Vikings clicking on all cylinders in the pool

Puyallup water polo squad dominates Emerald Ridge

Published: May 12th, 2008 01:07 PM

Puyallup’s water polo squad was not going to be denied on senior night.

Emerald Ridge proved to be no match with Puyallup’s powerhouse water polo squad on May 2 at Puyallup High School. When it was all over, Puyallup recorded a dominating 20-4 victory against one of their biggest rivals.

“We gave it all we had right to the end,” Emerald Ridge head coach Dave McMullan said. “Puyallup is a team that has gone to state the last couple of years. They’re a pretty good program and right now their a better team than us. But our team has made great improvements and great strides throughout this season.”

Callie Hyman and Lauren Gonick scored two goals each for Emerald Ridge in a losing effort.

Puyallup coach Todd Fletcher was pleased with the way his team performed.

“We were sharp and hit the corners when we took our shots,” Fletcher said. “We just played a really well-rounded game. We turned it on in the second half. It was only 6-2 at halftime.”

Alex Clark scored a season high eight goals and Lauren Griffin chipped in five goals in the contest.

The Vikings currently have a 11-3 record and are in a three-way tie for second place in the East Division with Auburn Riverside and Rogers. This week the Vikings had games against first place Enumclaw and second place Rogers High School. As of press time, results of those contests were unavailable.

“We probably got the least desirable schedule of teams vying for first or second place. It’s going to be a daunting task,” Fletcher said. “This week is huge for us. For us to beat Enumclaw and Rogers we’ll have to be as sharp as we were against Emerald Ridge. It’s a huge task and I think we’re up for it. We know we have the ability to win these kinds of games. That’s how we’re going to approach it.”
