The Ferrucci Cougars varsity girls soccer team registered an unforgettable spring season in 2008.
When the season was finally in the books, Ferrucci finished with an overall record of 8-0-2, earning the SPSL Sound Junior High Championship in early April.
Ferrucci dominated its foes, scoring 50 goals while surrendering just nine goals in 10 contests from the beginning of February to the end of March.
Stahl Junior High and Edgemont Junior High tied for second place with identical records of 6-2-2.
“It’s a pretty good feeling. We’re the best junior high soccer team in Puyallup,” Cougars coach Steve Aguilar said.
Aguilar said seeing his team go undefeated was a pleasant surprise.
“We expected to do well but we didn’t expect to go undefeated. When the school year started up last fall a lot of the players on the team told me how excited they were about the season coming up in the spring,” Aguilar. “These girls had the drive to make that happen.”
The Cougars set a few team records on their way to the SPSL Sound Championship.
“We shattered our old record for most individual goals scored in a season,” Aguilar said. “The record was nine goals and this year Kaila Brannan scored 17 goals.”
Even when the Cougars experienced ties against Edgemont Junior High and Stahl Junior High, they were disappointed with their performance.
“When we tied those games, the team as a whole just went through a debriefing process by themselves,” Aguilar said. “You could see how much they wanted to win. They talked amongst each other and knew what they had to work on and would come to me with their ideas. When they did that I said, “that’s what I would have said too.’ Having a team that knows what it wants to achieve is a good thing.”
