Overcast skies threatened to put a damper on Puyallup Parks and Recreation’s MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition on May 10 at Clarks Creek Park North.
Fortunately, the overcast skies didn’t produce any raindrops and roughly 25 participants showed their baseball abilities in front of their parents and community members.
“We were hoping for 35 but I think the precipitation in the morning might have had an effect on it,” Puyallup Parks and Recreation Coordinator Cody Geddes said. “The pitch, hit and run competition takes place on a yearly basis. It’s baseball specific and is an individual event.”
Jesse Jordan, a 10-year-old from Puyallup, couldn’t wait to test his pitching skills against a slew of competitors in his age group.
“I like to throw a lot of strikes and get people out,” Jordan said. “I’m here because they have a pitching contest. Pitching is fun.”
Geddes said athletes taking first place in their specific age divisions will advance to the sectional competition on June 1 in Olympia. If athletes perform well enough at sectionals, they have a chance at moving on to the regional competition at Safeco Field.
“After regionals is nationals and nationals are held at Yankee Stadium in New York,” Geddes said.
Local athletes punching their ticket to sectionals in Olympia included Jacob Krumbien in the 7 to 8 year-old division, Chase Barbre, Jesse Jordan, Brad Johns and Steven Parker in the 9 to 10 year-old division, Jacob Tacbot in the 11 to 12 year-old division and Jermaine Tores in the 13 to 14 year-old division.
