Jaguars season comes to a close

After defeating Kentlake in loser-out contest, Emerald Ridge falls against Bellarmine in West Central District playoffs

Published: May 15th, 2008 02:33 PM

A roller coaster type of soccer season for the Emerald Ridge Jaguars came to a screeching halt.

Bellarmine Prep nabbed a 2-0 victory on May 10 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, knocking the Jaguars out of the 4A West Central District playoffs.

Bellarmine Prep forward Dylan Gaydosh scored both of the Lions’ goals to preserve the victory.

“I thought we played very well. Especially in the first half. We had our chances,” Emerald Ridge coach David Rosdahl said. “ We kept fighting to the end. It just wasn’t our day today.”

Bellarmine utilized its size advantage against Emerald Ridge throughout the game.

“They have some really big tall kids. They like to use those tall guys to flick the ball with headers,” Rosdahl said. “That gave them some opportunities. Both of their goals were shots in front of the net. They penetrated our defensive third and got high percentage looks at the goal.”

Even though the Jaguars’ season ended in defeat, Rosdahl is proud of what his squad accomplished on the soccer pitch in 2008.

“We’ve made the playoffs three years in a row. That’s quite an accomplishment for the program,” Rosdahl said. “That was one of our goals at the beginning of the season and we achieved it. They’re a great group of kids. We had a lot of fun this year.”

Weeks wins it for Jaguars soccerballers

Kevin Weeks refused to let the Emerald Ridge Jaguars soccer season come to an end in their playoff opener.

Weeks and the Jaguars weren’t going to be denied against the Kentlake Falcons in a loser-out South Puget Sound League playoff game at Tahoma High School on May 7. After both teams failed to find the back of net during 80 minutes of regulation, the game went into two five-minute overtimes and even after the extra sessions, the game remained scoreless. Emerald Ridge basked in the glory of victory after beating Kentlake 2-1 in a shootout to advance to the West Central District playoffs.

Weeks not only blocked four Kentlake shot attempts in the shootout, but scored the game winning goal himself on Emerald Ridge’s last shot of the shootout.

“Kevin scored our second goal of the shootout and turned around and blocked their final attempt to tie it up,” Rosdahl said. “When he stopped it our entire team just mobbed him. He won the game for us. Kevin made 20 saves tonight. It was an unbelievable individual performance.”

Despite not scoring the entire contest, Kentlake controlled the tempo of the game in the first half.

“They definitely were dominating the game in the first 40 minutes against us. They had 11 shots on goal in the first half,” Rosdahl said. “We picked it up in the second half and had our chances but couldn’t put a goal in.”

In the overtime sessions, Rosdahl said there a few close calls where Kentlake nearly put the ball in the back of Emerald Ridge’s net.

“There were at least two plays where it was so close to them scoring but Kevin made some great saves that allowed us to get to the shootout,” Rosdahl said. “Once we got there Kevin did it for us again and we were able to come out on top.”
