Beyond the athlete: Next level is on the horizon

Shaun Scott

Rogers Rams senior Grant Williams is preparing himself for an opportunity of a lifetime. In the fall, Williams will suit up for the Eastern Washington Eagles football squad.

Currently, Williams who is a three-sport star at Rogers, is finishing up his senior year on the baseball field.

While Williams is enjoying his final season on the diamond, he’s already looking forward to putting on the pads this fall in Cheney.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” Williams said. “I’m happy I will be playing D-1 football. It’s going to be different playing with a whole new set of guys. I’m looking forward to it.”

Recently, I had an opportunity to sit down with Grant and asked him a few questions about his life away from the gridiron, baseball diamond and basketball court.

Shaun Scott: What is your favorite movie of all time?

Grant Williams: “Gladiator. Every time I watch that movie it inspires me. When Maximus fights it’s just awesome. He was doing it for his family.”

SS: What is your favorite dinner dish?

GW: “Steak and lobster. I love seafood and meat. It’s the perfect combination.”

SS: Who was your idol growing up?

GW. “It would have to be Derrick Thomas (Kansas City Chiefs linebacker). My dad and I were big fans of him. I remember watching Thomas, he was just a freak of nature. I remember one game where the offense was backed up near the goaline, Thomas signaled safety to the fans. The next play he sacked the quarterback in the end-zone for a safety. He was just a stud.”

SS: What is your favorite restaurant in Puyallup?

GW: “That’s a tough choice but I’m going to have to go with two. Red Lobster and Red Robin. I love the bottomless steak fries at Red Robin. You really get your money’s worth there and the Italian food at Red Lobster is phenomenal.”

SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?

GW: “Graduated from college. I still haven’t decided what I want to study in college yet. By that time I hopefully will be ready for the next stage in my life which will be getting a job, starting a family and all of that other good stuff.”

SS: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?

GW: “My grandpa on my dad’s side of the family. I never met him. He passed away before I was born. My dad always talks about him. My grandpa was in World War II and was a hardworking person that supported his family. One of the things I truly wish is that I could have gotten to know him. It would have meant so much to me.”

SS: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

GW: “The best advice I’ve ever received is from my dad and it’s not just one thing. He’s been a wonderful role model for me over the years and has been through a lot. He looks at the whole realm of the picture. He always told me that everyone makes mistakes but that the important thing is to learn from those mistakes to better yourself.”
