For many college students, its not the endless mounds of homework, the hour-long lectures or the group term papers that make school difficult. The difficulty for them comes in having to choose between staying home with a sick child or heading to biology class. It’s trying to find another sitter when the first one bails. It’s deciding if getting a college degree is really the best way to help the family. With the opening of the Garnero Child Development Center at Pierce College Puyallup, administration is taking a realistic look at the needs of their student body and helping to eliminate those difficult choices parents have to make when pursuing a college degree. The $2.45 million project will provide affordable child care for 64 children. It is a wonderful asset for the college community. There were times when it seemed like the idea was too big to come to life, but we commend the numerous volunteers, the administrators and the Pierce College Foundation for the courage to see it through. Not only will this center help current students but the effects will be seen for years to come.
