Sept. 13 — Names recognize people dedicated to education

Published: September 20th, 2007 10:14 AM

Two Puyallup schools opened this year, bearing names that honor those who have made a commitment to education. Emma L. Carson was Puyallup’s first school teacher in 1854 and George Washington Edgerton was a 26-year member of the district’s school board starting in 1898. Recognition of their role in education has been a long-time coming, but finally the two have joined 16 others with a Puyallup school named after them. Many were teachers or principals, people who touched the everyday lives of the students they served. Others weren’t. It’s a good lesson for residents today — you can be a doctor like Warner Karshner, a governor like John R. Rogers or a veterinarian like Vitt Ferrucci and still make a notable contribution to education. Not everyone can stand in front of a classroom vying for attention or help with homework after the final bell, but there are other ways to get involved with schools, like these men and women did. They deserve to be remembered. Others can follow in their footsteps.
