April 19 — Remember lessons of kindness, compassion

Published: April 19th, 2007 11:25 AM

Earlier this year, both Puyallup and Sumner school districts made strides to help prevent school violence. The districts both brought in a program called Rachel’s Challenge, named after Rachel Scott, the first Columbine victim. Speakers shared personal stories of horrific school shootings. They urged our young people, and adults, to get involved with other students, and show kindness and compassion to those around them. This week’s massacre at Virginia Tech ironically occurred just a few days before the eight-year remembrance of the Columbine tragedy. Information coming out now reveals that this disturbed student left warning signs that went unnoticed. A Rogers High School student posted a violent threat on a MySpace page last year, which made the Rachel’s Challenge program in East Pierce County timely and appropriate. We hope students and parents are keeping those lessons learned uppermost in their minds.
