From the Editor:The Herald wants more of your photos

Did you know that cats are flammable?

This wouldn’t seem quite so funny to me if my 6-year-old cat, Sophie, had suffered anything more than singed fur as she walked over a candle and went up in flames.

Sophie doesn’t know how to stop, drop and roll, but she still managed to put herself out quickly. She’s now a little less fluffy than she once was, and I seriously doubt she’s reliving the trauma on a nightly basis. That allows me to wish, without any guilt, that a camera had been on hand.

That’s the problematic part of cameras — you don’t always have them when it really counts, like when your cat catches on fire. I can tell you how funny it looked to me but a photo would really make it come alive.

That’s why I keep my camera on the coffee table in the living room. I have a whole series of shots of my misfit mutt climbing onto the dining room table to eat Chinese food. I have photos of our Christmas tree landing on my husband after an unsuccessful attempt to mount it into the stand.

I’m betting you have funny and interesting pictures, too, and that our readers would get a kick out of seeing them.

For the past several weeks, we have asked you to send in photos of your pets and we have received a great response. If you’re like me, you always have your camera ready to catch the silly situations your pets get into.

We want to keep receiving your pet pictures, but we want more. Every month we will come up with a different topic — from birthdays parties and BBQs to family vacations and camping trips — and hope you will oblige us by sending your pictures. We’re not asking you to become the next Annie Leibowitz, just continue taking photos of those rich moments in your lives. And then send them to us.

We also want your serious pictures, the ones that document significant events in East Pierce County.

Colleen Carroll, The Herald’s photographer, tries to catch as many moments as possible every week. She’s taken photos of mothers getting their babies ready for contests at the South Hill Mall and gentlemen having their hair trimmed at a local barbershop. On this week’s front page, you will get a glimpse of what life is like for the community’s female farmers.

There are so many more pictures we would like to publish in The Herald. But there’s only one of her and 120,000 of you. There is no way for us to be in all places at all times. So, we’re asking for your help.

Keep an eye out each month as we announce the newest topic for our A2 photos. That doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to one topic, but we thought it would be a good starting point. And by all means, if you have a topic suggestion, send it our way.

So, send your photos to editor@puyallupherald.com. In the subject line type “PHOTO.” Make sure you send us a large file size and include as much information about what’s going on in the photo as possible, including names, a description of what is occurring in the photo and where people live.

We look forward to seeing your photos really soon.
